Time

Morning tea for my husband

Here in the United States, June 19th is Father’s Day. I had asked my husband earlier in the week how he would like to celebrate the coming weekend. He told me he hoped to spend quality time with the family. Just like my father, my husband always prefers “time” with those he loves over gifts and restaurant meals. This means everyone would need to set aside the video games, social media, daily routines and outings with friends.

So, Father’s Day morning, I knew my husband would look forward to his morning cup of tea and a biscuit. Because in our house, a special day always begins in the kitchen preparing favorite foods and everyone takes part.

Popovers!

Sometimes it’s the little things that can bring the most joy.

That day, we sat around the table for brunch and dinner and talked about the latest news, threw out a few “What if” questions and laughed about lots of nothing in between mouthfuls of savory and sweet delights.

The following day, a family outing was planned. We were expecting very hot temperatures so a drive to the ocean was a welcome idea. Camera gear, snacks, water and sweatshirts were packed by mid morning and we were off.

Walking above the ocean tides

My husband led us along a walking trail high above the ocean currents and then down to the tide pools. He enjoyed the gorgeous scenery taking photos, something he loves to do in his spare time. My son climbed rocks and took photos with his camera while my daughter and I explored the craggy terrain.

Afterwards, we went to lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in a nearby seaside town. It was a beautiful day. Knowing these moments will become fewer and fewer with the kids getting older, it certainly was precious time well spent. It was a perfect Father’s Day weekend.
