The Cottage by the Sea
When the kids were still in primary school, we took them to visit family in Scotland. During one of those trips, we rented a cottage along the waterfront in the small town of Kinghorn. This was well before Airbnb. However, we were still fortunate to find this little gem online. We chose it because it was both close to my husband’s family who lived in neighboring towns and we liked all the creature comforts the place provided.
When we told my in-laws where we were planning to stay, they told us it was the same town where my husband’s father proposed to his mother! We had no idea! That made our stay extra special.
The view from the cottage was breathtaking with the little town on one side and the beautiful North Sea on the other. There was nothing like waking up to the sound of the waves and having the first cup of tea with that amazing view.
It was on this trip we let our children have their first cup of milky tea in the morning. We had been holding off on this due to the caffeine but these trips were special moments so we thought it would be okay to indulge them. They felt very “grown up.” And of course, they had to follow my husband’s dunking routine which was actually quite a treat to see.
This was also the last holiday we saw two of our loved ones before they passed. The cottage allowed us to host tea for them, share stories and create more memories. We miss them dearly.
Because I never knew my birth culture, I adopted my husband’s. I have so many stories to tell of our travels to the UK but I always seem to come back to our stay at the little cottage by the sea. Family - no matter how far away they may be, they are always close at heart.
