Snow Day

My sister sent me this photo from her front window during their first real snow this winter. The temperatures were in the negative numbers. It was too cold to be outside, so she spent the day sewing, something she enjoys doing whenever she has time.

Many states across the United States have been and are experiencing harsh winter weather and freezing temperatures.  While it was initially pretty cold where I live, it’s been a lot milder once the rain set in.  In fact, I was surprised to find it was raining this evening when I took the dog outside and I didn’t need to wear a heavy coat.

If you’re anything like me, these times really get me in the mood to settle in at home, dress in cozy loungewear, fill my largest mug with hot tea and just be lazy.  It reminds me of snow days when I was a child and schools were closed due to the weather.  I love these moments to unwind and relax.

Two days after we returned from traveling over the Christmas holiday, we had another day without electricity while the city did maintenance work in the neighborhood.  It was expected to be a very cold day, so we turned up the heating to get the house comfortable before everything shut off.  I have a gas stove, so I was able to make a cup of hot tea and enjoy a slice of Mont Blanc roll cake I bought at the local bakery.  I love when chestnuts are used in baking this time of year!

But this past Monday was my lazy day.  It was also a national holiday so many people were home from work and school.  It felt nice to sit at the table and have breakfast.  My husband had his oatmeal and cup of tea while I had a scone, I had baked the day before.  And you can’t have a lazy day without catching up on the favorite vloggers.

As I was too lazy to go out and buy bread, I decide to make some instead.  My son was so happy to wake up to the wonderful smell of yummy goodness.

And to round out the lazy day at home, I tried a new lentil soup recipe.  Unfortunately, it called for more lentils than I had in my cupboard, and I didn’t feel like running out to the store.  I decided to substitute the missing lentils with black beans.  This was a cozy, hearty meal to end the day.

But, as they say, all good things must come to an end.  There was housework to do, laundry to wash and a family who needed to prepare for work and school the next day.  I hope you have a “snow day” every once in a while to regenerate and spend time with those you love.
